This timeline forms part of NCVER’s VET Knowledge Bank which is found on their VOCEDPlus site. First published in 2018, it provides information about national, state and territory programs and policy initiatives that impact participation in VET from 1998 onwards. Thus, it presents 26 years of the national, state and territory programs, policy initiatives and economic events. You can sort by jurisdiction, including the Commonwealth, and also by other categories that might potentially interest you, including apprentices and trainees, students, equity groups, providers, employees and job seekers, industry and employers, external influences, government.

Looking beyond literacy to important non-cognitive skills

A recent 26 page OECD working paper, entitled ‘Beyond literacy: The incremental value of noncognitive skills’ suggests that over the past few years non-cognitive skills have gained attention as predictors of life outcomes over and above cognitive skills. This paper, which is a pretty dense one, “reviews a number of previous studies that have investigated how measure of non-cognitive skills predict important life outcomes such as educational attainment, employment, earnings, and self-reported health and life satisfaction.”

VDC would like to officially introduce our fantastic Keynote Speakers for the VET National Teaching & Learning Conference 2024. Last year’s line-up was spectacular, and this year is set to be just as groundbreaking.

The 2024 VET National Teaching & Learning Conference will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on the 15 & 16 of August with the theme ‘From Competence to Excellence – Strive to Inspire’. Over 2-days there will be an array of professional learning opportunities with a focus on VET practitioners, as well as a stream of sessions featuring VET applied research for other VET Sector professionals. Jobs and Skills Australia has recently released its April Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey (REOS) spotlight report. This link to the relevant report enables readers to access and ‘spotlight’ the experiences of employers recruiting an apprentice in a range of industries. Strong employment outcomes for apprentices and trainees in 2023

NCVER recently released their training outcomes report. According to the associated press release, the report “shows that 95.6% of apprentices and trainees who completed their training in a trade occupation were employed after training” although percentages were in the low to high 80 percent range for non-trade completers and non-completers. These results were similar to the results for 2022.
