UNESCO-UNEVOC’s Global Skills Tracker contains insights into VET and skills development across different countries and industries/occupations.
Currently the countries it covers are: Argentina, Chile, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, the Philippines and the state of Idaho in the USA.
Despite the fact that it is currently limited to just 10 countries – it will expand and over time will undoubtedly be a useful resource for Australian VET providers looking at transnational opportunities and partnerships for skills development activities.
For now if you are interested in specific occupations or industries in these countries or across all of them – it provides insights into the online jobs markets and broader labour markets (ie where more skills development initiatives are needed).
It also has interesting insights on:
- Green skills
- Digital skills
- AI skills
In our near neighbours (Malaysia and Philippines) there are very low levels of ‘greenness’ ie “the share of green skills on the total number of unique skills observed within a given occupation” and ‘green pervasiveness’ ie the share of online job advertisements (OJAs) containing at least one green skill on the total number of OJAs for a given occupation.”
- Malaysia: greenness 0.2%, green pervasiveness 1.9%
- Philippines: greenness 0.1%, green pervasiveness 1.1%
While that data may not be all that useful to the average Australian VET provider, for each country the skills tracker also details the Top 50 green skills being sought/referenced in online job advertisements. In Malaysia and the Philippines they include: “waste management”, “environmental compliance”, “energy conservation”, “ISO14000 Series”, “solar systems”, etc.
When it comes to digital skills it is a different picture in terms of how advanced both countries are:
- Malaysia: digitalness (ie the share of digital skills on the total number of unique skills observed within a given occupation) 22.6%, digital pervasiveness 60.4%
- Philippines: digitalness 24.1%, digital pervasiveness 56.1%
And the Top 50 digital skills sought in both countries range from entry level to highly sophisticated:
- Microsoft Excel/Office/Powerpoint
- Computer Literacy
- Automation
- Digital Marketing
- TikTok
- Agile Methodology
