The word ‘curriculum’ largely disappeared from the VET lexicon but seems to be re-emerging. Recently, four well known VET researchers (Steven Hodge, Anne Jones, Melinda Waters and Hugh Guthrie) had a paper published in the International Journal of Training research entitled ‘Curriculum across the great divide: exploring a key problem of Australian tertiary education.’

Applications for the VDC VET Australian Sustainability Fellowship close Friday 31 May 2024.
Working in partnership with the International Specialised Skills Institute (ISS Institute), VDC is pleased to be funding the Australian VET Sustainability Fellowship for Vocational Education & Training valued at $15,000. The fellowship involves the opportunity to travel abroad to research new skills and best practice in areas such as clean and alternative energy, upcycling, recycling, innovative technologies and sustainable processes and procedures, then disseminate the findings to the Australian VET sector upon return.

This paper – a systematic literature review – was published late last year (2023) in the Journal of International Students. It was authored by staff from Victoria University – predominantly from its Mitchell Institute. It examines factors driving international students’ choice of Australia as their preferred destination for tertiary education. There is also a good summary paper in The Conversation that summarises this work and compliments the summary we have written below.

This OECD Review authored by Cassie Hague “examines the effectiveness of online and blended learning in fostering higher-order thinking skills in higher education, focussing on creativity and critical thinking.” It found that, “for most students and contexts, in-person learning yields better or equivalent outcomes for higher-order thinking skills than fully online learning. However, blended and flipped learning show promise.”

Jobs and Skills Australia spotlights employers’ experiences recruiting apprentices
Jobs and Skills Australia has recently released its April Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey (REOS) spotlight report. This link to the relevant report enables readers to access and ‘spotlight’ the experiences of employers recruiting an apprentice in a range of industries. The REOS routinely asks around 1000 employers each month about their experiences recruiting staff. You can find the spotlight paper itself here.
