The VET sector has found itself at the heart of the debate around how to address Australia’s skills shortage as the nation moves towards a post-COVID economic recovery. Governments and industry are looking to us for solutions for how to encourage people into a vocational career and to train them to be work-ready.

As educators, we do have answers. We can respond to the call to train highly qualified people by honing and validating what we already do well. We can do it through collaboration and innovation: working together on new ways to deliver training that works for learners, educators and employers.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The recent reviews of vocational education and training have called for strategies to increase the use of RPL, to help people reskill or upskill and to encourage lifelong learning.

Yet it seems that RPL is often considered too difficult to arrange. This shouldn’t be the case. VETASSESS relaunched its RPL service earlier this year, with offerings for individuals and for training institutes, business and industry.

We currently offer RPL for

  • Certificates III and IV in Commercial Cookery
  • Certificates III and IV in Asian Cookery
  • Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology
  • Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology
  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology

We have worked to make our RPL as seamless as possible for people who may be working full-time or have family responsibilities. The service is fully online, and we provide a mentor to help candidates through the process. Candidates can be awarded a full qualification or a Statement of Attainment for units completed. Recognising completed units provides an opportunity for VET institutes to offer training towards the full qualification.

Assessment Development

Developing assessments that meet compliance/regulatory standards requires niche skills. We provide Assessment Development for registered training organisations (RTOs), TAFEs, industry and professional organisations, with a service that reflects the look and feel of the organisation and consideration of existing systems and resources.

Assessment is VETASSESS’ core business and our team includes subject matter experts with a sound knowledge of learning principles and assessment frameworks. They work with assessment developers and instructional designers who understand learner sensors and styles.

Partnering with us can be more cost effective than developing assessments in-house and reduces staff workload.

Assessment Peer Review

Training organisations use the VETASSESS Assessment Peer Review (APR) service as a quality assurance process for assessment, as part of their continuous improvement process.

We work with the trainer to understand their framework, their cohort of learners and what they require, and we provide solutions during the process.

APR enables trainers to demonstrate that standards are being met and practices reviewed and updated.

There is considerable innovation underway in VET and collaboration between industry, employers and trainers will enable training that is up-to-date and sets learners up for success in the workplace.
