There are just over 240,000 students doing VET in schools (VETiS), and nearly 18,000 are doing a schools-based apprentice or traineeship (SBAT). The SBATs represent 7.4% of all VETiS students.

While numbers are up over 2019 by 2.3%, overall numbers have declined by around 1% since 2016.

The data show that over half of them (54.4%) were studying a Certificate II qualification. It also shows that tourism, travel and hospitality continued to be the most popular training package, studied by 13.7% of all VET in Schools students in 2020. However, Business Services and Sport, Fitness and Recreation are right up there too as popular packages.

Student numbers are interesting too. NSW and Victoria have around 50,000 students each (NSW = 52,600 and Vic = 51,000). As always Queensland is the big user of VETiS, with over 81,000 students enrolled.

NCVER published these latest data here in late July this year. You can also build your own table to get the data you want by accessing the NCVER’s DataBuilder. You can also get a hard copy of the publication here.
