Jobs and Skills Australia spotlights…
Jobs and Skills Australia has recently released its April Recruitment Experiences and Outlook Survey (REOS) spotlight report. This link to the relevant report enables readers to access and ‘spotlight’ the experiences of employers recruiting an apprentice in a range of industries. The REOS routinely asks around 1000 employers each month about their experiences recruiting staff. You can find the spotlight paper itself here.

A recent 26 page OECD working paper, entitled ‘Beyond literacy: The incremental value of noncognitive skills’ suggests that over the past few years non-cognitive skills have gained attention as predictors of life outcomes over and above cognitive skills. This paper, which is a pretty dense one, “reviews a number of previous studies that have investigated how measure of non-cognitive skills predict important life outcomes such as educational attainment, employment, earnings, and self-reported health and life satisfaction.”

The 2024 VET National Teaching & Learning Conference will be held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on the 15 & 16 of August with the theme ‘From Competence to Excellence – Strive to Inspire’. Over 2-days there will be an array of professional learning opportunities with a focus on VET practitioners, as well as a stream of sessions featuring VET applied research for other VET Sector professionals. Perceptions of VET and its status
In late 2022 the House Standing Committee on Employment, Education and Training began work on an inquiry into the perceptions and status of vocational education and training. This has now been completed and the final report has been tabled. You can access the inquiry’s webpage here, including the terms of reference, details of public hearings and submissions, media releases and a copy of the final report.

This review, undertaken alongside “key developments at national and state levels such as the signing of a new National Skills Agreement, is seen as a timely opportunity “to carefully review the NSW VET system, examine its strengths and weaknesses and take action.”
This Interim Report “provides recommendations based on the Panel’s findings to the NSW Government. It captures qualitative insights from [their] consultations and reflects on the extensive research undertaken to date.” It also “outlines priority recommendations and emerging opportunities for further exploration.”
