This year, ACCE was pleased to host Australian career academic, Dr Mary McMahon as its Academic in Residence and was able to customise its two career practitioner courses for indigenous learners. Both courses were customised with development partner Carole Harrison from the Aboriginal Teaching and Learning Service and are based on traditional Aboriginal learning methodology. Already, ACCE has been able to employ two learners completing the Graduate Certificate in Career Development Practice within its the Jobs Victoria Career Counsellors service. Our aim is to build an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander career practitioner workforce to close the gap for Aboriginal students and adults in the community.

Training career practitioners of the future

The ACCE Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning provides ongoing professional development and training to ensure the community and schools have a future workforce of professional career practitioners and career counsellors across Australia. Its RTO (22523) division offers two CICA endorsed courses:

  • Graduate Certificate in Career Development Practice
  • Certificate IV in Career Development

Career consulting services

ACCE delivers career education and development consulting services across Australia and has managed substantial programs with community organisations, industry, and government. Its career service benchmarking assessments and career service plans have been used by schools across Australia and in industry.

ACEE delivers extensive workshops, training, and a major biennial career conference in Australia. We work closely with our 174 industry partners to ensure students and schools have access to relevant industry and career information. As a leading member and subject association, we partner with international career organisations and leading career experts to bring best practice career tools and research to Australia. Our consulting services have supported organisations like Toyota, Australia Post, and the Glaziers Association. These projects have included developing mentorship training programs for apprentices to increase their rate of completion, and transitioning support for large numbers of employees into further employment or skills and study pathways.

In 2021, ACCE was engaged to assist with design, development, and delivery of an Industry Work Experience program for Major Road Projects Victoria, which included iconic projects such as Victoria’s Big Build. Major Roads was committed to improving the knowledge base of students in secondary schools in relation to Careers in Civil Construction and aimed to support this through a structured work experience program. The Major Roads project was designed for school career practitioners and students in Years 7 to 12 to:

  • discover careers that exist within the civil construction industry,
  • explore career pathways into the industry, and
  • understand the role of key employability skills.

Our consulting includes supporting organisations with resource development. Earlier this year, we supported the Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service by helping them to develop a guide to apprenticeships for the ACT. ACCE also created resources with industry for school staff and students to use to develop knowledge about real industries including:

  • careers in the Regional Rail & Construction Industry,
  • careers in the Water Industry,
  • careers in the Sport, Recreation & Fitness Industry, and
  • careers in the Maritime Industry.

Our wide range of services to education have included the development of 60 industry immersion programs for students and the World of Work on Wheels (WOWOW) bus that connected STEM careers education information to over 6,000 students in rural and remote areas around Australia.
